The Els Bet Award was established to encourage students of Architecture at TU Delft to discover, use, change, expand, and develop ‘the urban development drawing’ as a component of the discipline’s research and design language.
Bachelors’ and Masters’ students from the Faculty of Architecture are invited to submit their drawing – or a series of related drawings – that was crucial in their urban planning assignments that year. The award is given annually at the Urban Design graduation exhibition at the end of the academic year. The jury consists of Birgit Hausleitner, Teake Bouma and Els Bet.
What to submit
Drawing – or a small series of drawings – that explains a task, discovery, or design intervention. The drawing should have a title, an explanatory subtitle, and (if necessary) a legend, scale, and north point. Send it as a .png or .tiff file with a resolution of at least 300dpi.
Text of max. 111 words explaining what the drawing is about (i.e. its context, assignment, discovery, imagination, etc.).
Please include your name, study component, and e-mail address.
Assessment criteria
Expressiveness
The drawing – or series of related drawings – catches the viewer’s eye, is both intriguing and illuminating and invites the viewer to think about the content and meaning of the drawing and the design task set within it.
Composition
In constructing the drawing, compositional elements such as lines, colour, layout, spacing, depth, proportions, contrast and clarity have been used effectively to create a powerful image.
Professionalism
The work shows that the maker recognises and explores the urban drawing as its own domain. The maker uses the drawing as a research and design instrument, unpacking, searching and experimenting, on the way to their own signature in the discipline.
The Award
A prize print
In consultation with a leading printer, a limited-edition print (of two pages) will be made of the drawing with its explanation. Eight copies will be provided for the winner and copies will go on permanent exhibition in the Architecture faculty and its archive.
Visibility
The printed drawing and explanation will be displayed on the wall of the library on the first floor of the faculty.
Publication and publicity
The prize will be announced on Instagram, Bnieuws, Atlantis, Blauwe Kamer, LinkedIn, the faculty website, the Urban Design website, and the faculty TV screens.
